Topic 1: Using the Hellenic League to Oppose the Persian Invasion Topic 2: United the Greek City States
The year is 481 BC, and Xerxes I, King of Kings, of the Achaemenid Empire has planned to assemble a titanic army to subjugate the disparate city states of the Greek peninsula under Persian rule. After a ten year interbellum, the Greek cities formed the Hellenic League, a loose confederation, to counter the Persian threat. There are also many neutral states that may yet be persuaded to join the fight against Xerxes. The League must not only deal with the looming outside threat of the Persians but also internal tensions between the city-states themselves. How might the newly formed Hellenic alliance prepare to defend against the greatest empire the world has seen? In addition to this, the Greek cities all have their own interests, plans, and values that must be managed to keep the League together. How might the states of the Hellenic League unite the various city states and prevent old rivalries from flaring up?
